plein air
These paintings are of my family , in our home, and the landscape where we live on Puget Sound in Washington State .
I paint directly from life. I prop up the biggest of these paintings, up to ten feet in length, directly on the ground, returning at the same time of day, for weeks or months . I begin with large brushes and big shapes , adding more details and correcting the drawing as I go along. This trial and error , the history of that process in the paint surface , is what gives a painting beauty and makes an emotional impact on the viewer.
